We’ve seen some questions in our community around the amount of written data using the Spotify client on desktop. Spotify has acknowledged the issue and has rolled out v1.0.4.2 of their app with a fix for this bug. The data writing task appears to occur even when one is not listening/streaming any music through Spotify and only has the desktop app opened. “If for example, Castrol Oil lowered your engine’s life expectancy by five to 10 years, I imagine most users would want to know, and that fact *should* be reported on.”
“This is a *major* bug that currently affects thousands of users,” Spotify user Paul Miller told Ars. Some users have even reported of the app writing over 1TB of data over 2-3 weeks. Leaving the app open for a day resulted in the app writing more than 700GB of data. Most users have complained about the Spotify app silently writing tens or hundreds of GB of data within an hour or two. On Macs with a traditional hard disk, such intense data writing task can greatly slow down system performance. Such intense data writing activity over a period of time can be really harmful to SSDs since they have a limited data writing cycle.
